Camper c driver's license

Some motorhomes have a motorhome c driver's license needed to get on the road. Therefore, do your research well whether you should follow a course or even get a different driver's license. Most motorhomes of two to six people can be driven with a regular B driving license. If it is for more than six people, you must get an additional driver's license. A different driving license is also required if the motorhome exceeds the maximum permitted weight of 3.500 kilograms. We explain exactly how this works, so that you know in no time whether you need to get a supplementary driver's license. Below you will find an overview of motorhomes that require a motorhome driving license.

When is a motorhome driver's license required?

With only a b driver's license you are not there if you want compact campers occasions rent goes. You must of course also have the necessary driving experience to go for a motorhome rental. We apply the rule that you must be at least 25 years old and have had a driving license for at least 5 years. It is also important that you inform us in advance who the drivers will be during the camper trip Europe† Do not deviate from this because you must carefully follow all instructions from us. Everything to make driving in a motorhome as safe as possible. It is therefore absolutely not allowed to drive faster than the maximum allowed speed. While we always recommend a speed between 100 and 110 kilometers per hour, this also applies as the maximum speed on many Dutch highways. So keep this in mind when you hit the road.

Difference between driving license c and d

A motorhome driver's license is required if the motorhome is heavier than 3.500 kilograms. A driving license c3.500 is still sufficient for between 7.500 and 1 kilograms. If you are above then it is necessary to get a motorhome driving license. This also depends on the number of people you will be transporting. Where you have a limit of 1 people with a c6 driver's license, this expires with a camper c driver's license. There is a limit here from 8 people. So if you take more than 8 people with you on a trip, it is necessary to get a so-called 'bus driver's license'. Also called a driver's license. However, from experience we dare to say that a camper with more than 8 places hardly occurs in practice. A camper 5 people on the other hand, you can drive 'normally' with a driving license b.

Rules in practice

In practice, it appears that the rules can be misinterpreted rather quickly. As mentioned, it is mandatory in the Netherlands to go for a c1 driver's license if the motorhome weighs between 3.500 and 7.500 kilograms. If the vehicle is lighter, you can simply drive on the road with a car driver's license. Please note: the weight of the motorhome and the payload is calculated from the value stated on the registration certificate. Suppose that the vehicle registration certificate states a weight of 3.100 kilograms and a payload of 400 kilograms, in theory you would be allowed to drive on the road with a B driving license. However, many novice camper travelers do not take into account that the camper is not yet ready for the camper holiday† Seats and extra cargo such as bicycles, inventory and a water tank are not yet included. This often results in people exceeding the maximum weight of 3.500 kilograms. So it is very important to take this into account in advance.

Avoid fines

Driving a motorhome that is too heavy – whether consciously or not – can lead to a high fine. Or even worse: to unsafe situations on the road. Besides the fact that you can get a fine, it is also possible that the registration certificate has to be adjusted and a C1 driver's license is needed to go on the road. Fortunately, this does not have to take long in practice. We often see that a c1 driver's license can be obtained within a few days. You must of course plan this in time so that there is room and time to take lessons. And of course to schedule an exam after which you can receive the 'bigger driver's license'.
