Buy a 4 × 4 camper

The motorhomes in our range have front-wheel drive as standard. It is not common or standard for a motorhome to have four-wheel drive. With four-wheel drive, both the front and rear wheels are driven by the engine. Only 5% of the motorhomes on the market have such a wheel drive, so very little. Most four-wheel drive motorhomes are sprinter 4×4, which have been converted into bus camper. Think of a Nissan Patrol, a Fiat Ducato or a converted Mercedes sprinter 4×4. These are real off-road campers.

Four-wheel drive is very useful if you often travel with a trailer. In this way, the camper can pull the trailer better. There are a number of more advantages to a 4×4 motorhome occasion:

  • With four-wheel drive, there is less chance that you will get stuck in a surface of mud, grass or sand. But you still have to avoid these rough surfaces as much as possible with a 4×4. It is suitable as an off-road camper, but always put safety first.
  • With a camper with a powerful engine, it is best to buy a 4 × 4 camper. Characteristic of heavy motorhomes is that they steer more restlessly. This problem is alleviated by four-wheel drive.
  • The grip of the camper on the road is better with a 4 × 4. Especially if there is a trailer behind it.

4 × 4 also has disadvantages

There's a reason there are more front-wheel drive RVs on the market than four-wheel drive. That's because four-wheel drive is only useful in specific cases, for example if you really want to go off-road. Often the disadvantages overshadow all the advantages. So here are all the cons at a glance:

  • In general, the motorhome becomes more expensive from 4×4. If you are going to buy a 4×4 camper, there is much more technology in it, which is reflected in the purchase price. In addition to the purchase price, it can also become more expensive in terms of road tax, because the 4×4 campers are relatively heavy.
  • Do you travel a lot in the winter? Then four-wheel drive is not such a wise choice. Where this motorhome has a lot of grip on an ordinary surface, it loses it when it is slippery.
  • A 4×4 camper is often on the edge in terms of driver's license. With a four-wheel drive you must be in possession of a C or C1 driving license (depending on the model). Some 4×4 campers can be driven with a B driving license, but in those cases it is certainly advisable to first follow a driving course since there are major differences in the controls. By following a course beforehand, you can trade safely on the go.

Whether or not to go for a 4 × 4 camper?

If you want to buy a 4 × 4 camper, you can often cancel the plan due to the disadvantages of the 4 × 4. In which cases can you and in which cases not buy a 4 × 4 camper?

It is good to buy a four-wheel drive camper if you often attract heavy trailers behind the camper. 4 × 4 campers are also nice if you are looking for a sporty look, a certain heavy engine or a special chassis.

If you choose a motorhome with a normal engine, you better just stick to a front-wheel drive. In these cases, four-wheel drive can even backfire. Do you have any questions before buying a 4 × 4 camper? Ask us!
