Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

The most famous region of the south is Provence. A chic area that is popular with celebrities and those who love sun, sea and sand. The region is best known for the Cannes Film Festival, luxurious seaside resorts and historic centres.

The symbol of Provence are the endless lavender fields that are in full bloom in summer. There are various routes along these plants that you can walk and inhale the fresh scents during the most famous lavender route between Montélimar and Nyons.
Discover one of the oldest cities in Europe and the oldest city in France: Marseille! The history of the city can be seen in art and the architecture of buildings. History abounds here. The city has beautiful harbors with many boats and a flourishing café culture.

New Aquitaine

The name says it all: Nouvelle-Aquitaine is a new region. It is a stylish coastal town famous for its combination of beaches, surf culture, dining and architecture.

The capital is Bordeaux, the city of world famous wines and rich history. Here there are several wine tastings and there are beautiful mansions, churches, squares and museums to visit.
Place de la Bourse is an elegant town square with palatial buildings facing the Garonne River. It is the most beautiful square in France with a water mirror to demonstrate the symmetry of the buildings.

Occitania

Occitania is the current name of the combined regions of Languedoc-Roussillon and the Midi-Pyrenees. This great new region has many mountains, beaches and many attractions.

Carcassonne is one of the most visited places in the South of France, as it has a medieval citadel that is completely intact! This is very special and has had a major renovation, adding nice shops and a large covered market.
Sail in a small boat under the beautiful caves of the French mountains. La Gouffre de Padirac is a special stalactite cave where you sail at a depth of 100 meters, on an underground river!

South of Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes

The south of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is located north of Provence. The region borders the Alps and is therefore named after them.

Get into untouched nature and breathe the fresh air of nature, hike through the Alps! There are beautiful mountain landscapes and vast lakes. Both in summer and in winter you can enjoy hiking in the mountains of France.
Learn a lot about volcanoes and their functioning in the interesting science park Vulcania. You will learn about the volcanoes worldwide and also about those in the Auvergne. There are many interactive parts, tours and playgrounds for the young children.

Spending the night in your motorhome in the South of France

During your motorhome holiday in the South of France, you can stay overnight at any place where cars and buses are allowed to park, unless otherwise indicated. This should not be longer than 7 days.
In some places along the highway you can also stay overnight and you can stay here for a maximum of 24 hours. These places are called 'aire de repos' and have only basic facilities such as toilets and picnic tables for example. 'Aires de service' have more extensive facilities such as a restaurant or a shop. These often have a water tap or a place to empty the toilet. Please note in advance whether you are allowed to stand with a large camper (from 3500 kg).
You can also spend the night on specially equipped motorhome pitches, for only a few euros per night. There are also campsites everywhere in the south of France where you can spend the night, then you have more facilities.
Camping in nature is also an option, but for wild camping in the south of France it is important to first get permission from the landowner or the police.
