Preparing for a motorhome trip

We are happy to help you to start well prepared when traveling with a motorhome. We therefore think it is wise to go for an easy destination. One with a wide range of campsites. And where the roads are as well maintained as possible. During a trip you can alternate between different ways. Go for wild camping, a motorhome or just a regular campsite. Book a pitch. Or go on the spec with the camper. With the latter way you will more than once come across a beautiful place that you hadn't thought of before! This is recommended, especially outside the high season, so that you can always find a place to stay overnight.

Rent or buy a motorhome?

From our experience, you will only really find out what you need during a camper trip when traveling with a camper. That is why we also recommend that you rent a motorhome before you buy it. First of all, you will find out whether camping in itself is really for you at all. If that is the case, you can continue the choice for a camper. Check which facilities you do and do not want to have. And make the right choice between different types of motorhomes. The choice for the right motorhome starts with the number of people who are going on a trip. At a rent a motorhome 6 people you will eventually end up with a different type of camper. Then choose between a camper van, alcove camper, semi-integrated camper or an integral camper.

What are the requirements of traveling with a motorhome?

If you are going to travel with a motorhome, it is also important to check whether you meet the right requirements. It is therefore advisable to check whether you have the correct driver's license. With a B driving license you can drive a motorhome of a maximum of 3.500 kg. Ultimately, these requirements also play a role whether you go for a large or small motorhome. Depending on these choices, the luxury that you can expect from a motorhome also changes immediately. It is in any case very important that you know the camper. Especially if you go through small villages and narrow roads you need to know what the dimensions and weights are. It is also important to know where the water and fuel tanks are located.

You must also have the necessary documents when traveling with a motorhome. The first thing you should of course think of is a driver's license and identity card. Most travelers will think of this. However, it is also important to have a registration certificate, car insurance and green card arranged. Depending on the country you are traveling to, the necessary vignettes and environmental stickers are also required. So check carefully what the specific rules are in the country you are traveling to. And don't be faced with (unpleasant) surprises afterwards during a RV rental weekend.

Practical matters during a motorhome trip

With a motorhome trip, it is important to take extra costs into account. And by that we mean the costs in addition to renting or buying a motorhome. Below we have already made a nice list that you should take into account.

  • Fuel
  • Overnight stays
  • Toll roads
  • Vignettes and environmental stickers
  • Groceries

In addition to the costs, we have also prepared some practical tips for you. First of all, it is important that you adjust the driving style on the road. You also need to have a good view of the road. In the camper itself, it is important that you store everything neatly and properly. Do not forget to close the boxes neatly to prevent everything from rolling through the camper. Also make sure that you connect the electricity and that the gas bottle opens and closes properly. It is also advisable to have an emergency kit with what you can eat. You also need to know what the traffic rules are at your destination.
