Practical tips

Norway is one of the most beautiful camper destinations in the world. The nature is beautiful, so you won't be bored for a moment while driving. You will look up to the fjords, beautiful waterfalls and probably also drive along beautiful beaches. In the right period you can also see the northern lights or even spot wild animals.

To travel without worries, it is extremely important to plan a route; something we will help you with in this article! There are also things that you need to arrange in time to ensure that everything runs smoothly. We list these points below.

Camping or wild camping?

Norway is one of the few European countries where allemannsretten, also known as the right to roam, applies. Wild camping is therefore allowed. There are some rules for this:

  • You can spend the night in a camper or tent in wooded, mountainous and rural environments.
  • The minimum distance to an inhabited house or chalet must be 150 meters.
  • Finally, the most important rule; have respect for nature. You have to be self-sufficient and not leave a mess behind.

So it is important that you empty the toilet in a different place and take all your waste with you until you can throw it away. On the website of visit Norway you can read more about it here.

Would you rather spend the night at a campsite? That is also possible! Norway has many campsites, often in beautiful nature reserves. Always make sure you have cash with you; You often pay for laundry facilities and showers with coins. Keep in mind that Norwegian campsites are quite basic.

Traveling via toll roads or by ferry?

You pay tolls for many ferries and roads in Norway. The rates are based on the fuel of the vehicle. You can pay in different ways.

Register in advance

We recommend that you register your vehicle in advance with Epass-24. You can register the (rental) camper in advance for the automatic payment system. With the account you can immediately see the costs per route. If you link a payment card to the system, you can have payments processed automatically. If you do not do this, you will receive the bills at home. Please note that these are always more expensive than via automatic payment.

Pay with a toll badge

The second option is to purchase a toll badge from easygo. This allows you to pay the tolls in Denmark (for the ferry or bridges). You must request the toll badge in advance and stick it on the inside of the windscreen. With this toll badge you can travel with a big discount.

We also wrote a blog about it earlier tolls in Scandinavia, you can read more about it here.

Currency in Norway

In Norway you pay with Norwegian Kroner. As mentioned earlier, it is useful to have cash with you at campsites, but you can also pay by card at most campsites. For the rest you can pay electronically everywhere. You can pay with your debit card everywhere in supermarkets, restaurants or at gas stations. That can be useful since they have a different currency.

Traffic rules in Norway

The roads in Norway are very good. There are many two-lane roads and tunnels. You must always drive with low beam in tunnels. Furthermore, the average speed is 70 km per hour. So keep in mind that the travel time can be very long. That is why we always recommend that you allow plenty of time for your camper trip.

Groceries and other costs

Norway is a bit more expensive compared to the Netherlands. On average, groceries are more expensive than in the Netherlands, especially alcohol. So keep this in mind by going out with a full shopping bag. Do you still want to do some affordable shopping? Then it is best to go to the Rimi, Rema 1000 or the Kiwi. The mid-range supermarkets are Joker, Coop, Spar and Bunnpris.

In restaurants you can expect main courses to cost €35. Norway is also a bit more expensive in this area. But you can also eat cheaper by going to a pizzeria, for example.

Rent a suitable camper

The most important thing is that you go out with a nice camper. At Camperhuren.nl you can rent any type of camper. Both for families as for with his twos. We are available 24/7 with service during your trip. Furthermore, our campers are all self-sufficient, which is extra nice if you go wild camping.
